Heart & Hand 2014: FAIR Sue Firkser

Meet Sue Firkser, 2014 Folk Artist-in-Residence at Joseph Schneider Haus. Sue discovered felting about six years ago and fell instantly in love!
She has always been a painter, in various mediums, but enjoys using felt as a means to express herself in a painterly way. Sue uses colour (wool roving) and line (silk) to lead the viewer through her artwork and although the pieces have a fragile appearance, they are in fact quite strong due to the blending of the fibres during the felting process. Wool is one of the oldest and strongest fibres known to man.
Sue’s training in environmental design gave her the chance to explore commercial fabric and upholstery design and in later years contributed to a successful business of the surface design and production of a line of flannel pajamas.
More recently she has begun to play with felt and fibres to create functional clothing, hollow form sculpture and decorative arts for the home. Sue enjoys pushing the boundaries of this ancient craft.
Sue will be demonstrating wet felting at the Heart & Hand Festival this year. Drop by and say hello!
